Keys to elongating your silhouette:
Horizontal lines cut off the figure and make us appear wider and shorter than we are. Avoid tops and bottoms that are in high contrast colors (a white top and black pants, for example). It is better to choose similar colors to create an elongated look.
Vertical lines such as pleats, v-necklines, open jackets and slacks create an elongated silhouette.
The same color (monochromatic) from head to toe will also create a continuous, lengthwise flow. Blend similar colored shoes and hose to appear taller.
Avoid tops that hit below mid-thigh unless paired with a skirt that falls above the knee.
Accessories - Dos and Don'ts1. Do wear a gently pointed toe. It's more lengthening than a rounded or square toe.
2. Don't wear t-straps, bows or heavy buckles on your shoes - it creates a wide, horizontal effect.
3. Do wear your skirt hems long enough to cover your boots. Otherwise you create a broken line instead of a slenderizing vertical line.
4. Don't wear flats unless paired with long narrow pants or a short skirt. Heels of at least 1 1/2 inches are a better choice.

How to dress to impress.
1. Wear appropriate attire for the occasion. Many people under or overdress for the event they are attending. If the event invitation specifies a dress code, you'll need to make sure you adhere to that. Listed below are the common types of dress codes and their meaning.
Professional - you'll need to make sure the clothing is conservative and formal. For men, this is normally a business suit, tie, and dress pants. For women, a business suit or dress and jacket is the norm.
Business casual - this type of clothing is a lot more informal than professional dress, but still common office wear. For men, no tie is required, but a polo or shirt with collar, khakis, or dress pants and dress shoes. Women should wear nice shoes, a collared shirt or sweater and dress pants or khakis.
Casual - you wouldn't normally wear this type of clothing to work. It's common, everyday clothing, including T-shirts, jeans, and sneakers.
Be hygienic. Your clothes should be clean and not smell dirty or have any malodors radiating from them3
Buy your size. A bigger shirt will hide the shape of your body. 4
Match! Make sure that your outfit does not clash! Now this is a tricky one because it does not have to be exact, but go for a specific colour scheme or style and stick to it. Matching does not have to be colouring specific but materials and style are key to accomplishing this feat. 5
Accessorize. The right watch or earrings can really make an outfit stand out and a properly placed accessory can take attention away from any problem areas. But you have to know how many accessories you need. Too many could be distracting, and not very attractive.
Be yourself. Fashion is an expression of you and your likes and dislikes. It is an art, and to be fashionable is to be unique. So try to add a personal touch to all your outfits that signifies who you are.
